Monte Mar 10th Anniversary

1st to 10th May 2015

Friday 1st May, a  SABA Summer League Game:  Monte Mar Toro –v- Quesada Lancasters

Another lovely hot morning with some Bowling to match the weather by both the Toro and the Lancasters.  The rinks were shared 3 each but got the extra points for winning the shots 111 to 99.  This gave the Toro 8 points, the Lancasters 6. Well done to the winning rinks of Sheila Roberts, John Cagier and skip David Eades, Ronnie Cairns, June Young and skip Chris Merry and Geraldine Fisher, Janet Gatward and skip Gordon Fisher.

Saturday 2nd May , an Invitation Game: Monte Mar –v- The CBBA Provincial Team.

This fixture was arranged as part of our celebration and features 6 rinks, 3 Ladies and 3 Men’s teams.  On this occasion the Monte Mar Ladies beat the Provincial 2 rinks to 1 but the Men lost 2 rinks to 1, so the honours were shared.  The Provincial narrowly won the shot difference though.  The game was followed by a dinner in the Rincon Restaurant.  Following the meal, and a few drinks, the results were announced and Monte Mar raised their glasses to our visitors.  Each player on this occasion was given a specially created pin badge as a memento of them being part of our Anniversary Week.

Sunday 3rd May,  an Invitation Game: The Annual 4 Nations Tournament

In this event 6 teams of rinks from the 4 Nations of England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales compete for an overall trophy.  The result is based on the total shots gained by each Nation throughout the full-days bowling.  On this occasion the England Team won the trophy by attaining a total of 112 shots in their 6 games.  Narrowly missing the total by only 3 were Scotland with 109 shots, followed by Ireland with 100 and Wales with 96.    Brian Gardiner, the Captain of the Welsh Team presented Arthur Brown, Captain of the afternoon session for England, with the Trophy following a really very closely contested full days bowling.  Although not a ‘Monte Mar’ event our club was well represented and there were several Monte Mar spectators there to support the efforts of the bowlers.

Monday 4th May, a  SABA Summer League Game: Monte Mar Toro –v- Greenlands Glosters.

In the second fixture in 4 days the Toro were again at home, this time to Greenlands Glosters.   They achieved a better result, despite most of the rinks being fiercely contested in the very hot conditions, by winning 5 of the rinks and drawing on the sixth.  This, with a shot difference of 32 gave Monte Mar a 13 points to 1 win. Keith Simpson, Chris Harding, Skip Dave Melville 18-14. Sheila Roberts, Wendy Oxley, Skip David Eades 22-11. Denise Ashberry, Len Counsell, Skip Chris Merry 16-15. Ken White, Joe Ridley, Skip Diane Ridley 17-13. Ethel Finan, Janet Gatward, Skip Tony Finan 26-14. Lynne Armitage, Joan Harding, Skip Colin Armitage 15-15. A great performance by a depleted Toro team with a number of regular players absent, so congratulations to all the team members for a splendid team effort.

Tuesday 5th May, an Invitation Game: Monte Mar –v- CBBA President’s Team

Again, as part of our celebrations, Monte Mar invited the CBBA President, Jean Cooper, to select a team from the CBBA area to play against Monte Mar.  The format was 2 pairs; 2 trips and 2 rinks.  After a good morning bowling Monte Mar won both the rinks games, one of the trips and one of the pairs.  This gave Monte Mar a win of 4 games to 2 and the overall shots by 103 to 94. After the game our thanks were given to all those from the CBBA side who had played.  They were provided with the memento badge.

Wednesday 6th May, a VCL Game:

The Monte Mar Team visited Quesada as part of the VCL season. Our rinks team gained a creditable draw 20 shots each and Keith Simpson had a great win 21 – 12 in the singles.  The other three disciplines lost but the pairs only narrowly.  The overall result was 3 points to Monte Mar and 9 to Quesada. On the same day the Monte Mar Club held a Ladies –v- Men Game as part of the anniversary.  After a ‘friendly’ morning bowling it is reported that the Men narrowly won.  By the time the VCL team got back from Quesada the party was still in full swing.  Another good Monte Mar Day.

Thursday 7th & Friday 8th May, a special two-day event for Monte Mar:

Entry to this event was open to Bowlers, Social Members, Ex-Members and Guests.  In all 36 players took part.  12 Teams of 3 were selected and these competed in singles, pairs and trips games over the 2 days.  Day 1 was from 10.30am until 4.45pm at which time the Club Owner provided a buffet for all the players and guests.  Our councillor, Loreto Cascales, came along to join in the fun.   After a second day of bowling under hot Spanish Sun a team emerged as winners.  The team of Jan Soars, Wendy Oxley and Tony Finan won 5 of their 6 games and were declared winners.       At 7.30pm on the Friday evening 65 club members and guests mustered in the El Rincon Restaurant for our Anniversary Party.  We all had a very good evening with dinner, a table quiz, a prize ‘give-away’ and dancing to DJ Tony Hall.  During the evening the Chairman presented Jan, Wendy and Tony with their trophies for winning the bowling event.

Saturday 9th May, our Charity Fund Raiser and Cake & Bling Sale.

Our bowls green was set out as a ‘fun course’ and players paid to our charity fund to ‘have a go’.  Various targets and goals were set and each rink had a different challenge. After about 2½ hours the sun and the drink took its toll and Barrie Woodfine was declared the winner of the trophy.  140€ was raised for charity.

During the charity event the club held a Cake and Bling stall to raise money for club funds.  A considerable amount was raised and we thank all the ladies who baked, made and sold these items on behalf of the club.

Sunday 10th May, our finale.  The Chairman’s Team –v- The Captain’s Team.

This is an annual event but it was staged this week to coincide with our Anniversary.  The Chairman and the Captain selected 6 teams of 4 each from the 48 players who elected to play.  A standard 18 end game of rinks bowls was then played.  After all the games were completed the Captain’s side had won 4 and the Chairman’s side 2.  The Captain’s side had also won the overall shot difference and so was declared winner. Some of the non-playing Ladies had prepared a substantial buffet for us after the game and this was enhanced by the owner who provided some chips.  Our thanks again go to them. After the meal the Chairman’s wife, Barbara Farrelly, presented Club Captain, Chris Merry, with the trophy.

That concluded ten days ‘full on’ bowling, drinking, partying, eating, more drinking, fund raising and even more drinking.  We had played three league games; hosted the 4 Nations; played against two invited sides; had two club competitions and had a fund raising day.

Thanks must go to all those who played in the various games; to the players from other clubs who supported us;  to the ladies who helped out in the background throughout the ten days.  Without their efforts none of these things would happen.  Also thanks go to the staff at the El Rincon for their help during the week.  Time for a rest.
